Pequod Systems Awarded Small Business of the Year Award by the Baltimore/Washington Corridor Chamber of Commerce

On February 25, 2006, the Baltimore Washington Corridor Chamber of Commerce presented Pequod Systems with its Business of the Year award in recognition of nearly five years of involvement with the BWCC and Pequod's involvement in the community with Toastmasters International.

The award reads:

In recognition of Pequod Systems for notable contributions and achievements in business and service within the Baltimore/Washington Corridor the 2005 Business of the Year Award is presented on 25 February 2006 by the Board of Directors and members of the Baltimore/Washington Corridor Chamber of Commerce and its affiliated organizations established to serve the business community.

Pequod Systems joined the Baltimore/Washington Corridor Chamber of Commerce in 2001. Shortly thereafter, Pequod became an active member of the BWCC Technical Interest Group, which later changed its name to the Business Tools Group and moved its meetings from Columbia to Laurel. Pequod urged the group to produce at least one educational seminar monthly. Eventually BTG produced two seminars monthly.

In 2005, Pequod recruited and led a BWCC taskforce that produced a brochure targeted at small business owners whose eMail addresses advertised major eMail service providers rather than the name of the business owner.

Pequod then joined the BWCC Membership Services Committee. Having listened to fellow BWCC members present brief introductions about their businesses at networking events, the partners realized that while some were effective communicators, others seemed seriously in need of polish for their presentations. Pequod decided to market a special eight-week Toastmasters International program called Speechcraft to BWCC and to the surrounding Laurel community. Speechcraft 2006, supported by BWCC members and endorsed by the BWCC Membership Services Committee, was conducted by experienced members of the Crown of Laurel Toastmasters club. Speechcraft 2006 became a successful project which provided an opportunity for business people to learn and practice the fundamentals of public speaking in a relaxed setting.
